5 Basic HVAC Tips Homeowner's Should Know

October 25, 2021 | Blog

We all know it’s important to take steps to maintain various utilities around our home to get the most out of them. When it comes to HVAC units, it can be a little more complicated. AC units are big complex machines, making it difficult to know what you can do to keep them in top shape.

Here at Efficient Systems, we are experts when it comes to all things Air Conditioning and Heating. Here are 5 tips to keep your HVAC system in top condition.

Change Your Filter

Do you want to boost your home air quality while simultaneously using your HVAC unit more efficiently? Then it’s time to change those air filters. Most homes have about 1 or 2 air filters to keep out dust and dirt particles from entering your home. Over time, these filters will begin to build up a lot of dust making them not only inefficient but also causing your HVAC unit to work even harder to cool or heat your home.

To replace them, simply find where your air filters are in your home and examine the diameters of them. Then, pick up some replacement filters at a local hardware store. Most filters last about 2 months, so keep track of the date you replaced them so you know when it’s time to replace them again.

Clean the Area Around Your Unit

Most air conditioning units have an outdoor component. While this part of your HVAC unit is designed to take on the elements, it isn’t indestructible. If debris gets caught in the fan or the body of the unit, it can cause serious damage. Leaving you with a costly repair. Avoid the worry altogether and maintain the area around the AC unit.

Sweep away dirt and debris and remove anything that might be on top of the unit. If you do find something has been caught in the fan, then call an HVAC professional to come and tune-up the unit and clean out any debris.

Check and Clean Your Ductwork

If you want to have solid indoor air quality, then you’ll have to do more than change your air filters. The air vents throughout your home will also build up dust and dirt over time. And as fresh air is blown through these vents, so will the dirt inside of them.

While you can feel free to clean the front of the air vents, you’re going to need a professional to clean the ducts thoroughly. HVAC technicians have a variety of tools to help them clean the ducts, so leave it to the pros. If you know it’s time to get your ductwork cleaned, then don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with an HVAC technician.

Check Your Evaporator Coil Drainpipe and Drain Pan

Every AC unit has a drain pipe that leads somewhere outside of the home and with it is a drain pan. If you live in a humid area, like Beaumont, Texas, then you’ll find that mold and algae can build up in the pipe and drain pan, causing clogs.

If you aren’t sure where your drainpipe or drain pan is, have an HVAC technician show you the next time you are having an inspection. They can also give you some tips on how to properly clean it.

Call A Professional for Regular Maintenance

Most AC units can last anywhere between 15 and 20 years. But if you want to get closer to that 20-year mark, then schedule an HVAC tune-up at least twice a year. During a tune-up, the HVAC technician will take steps to keep your AC unit maintained and at optimal performance.

They also look for any small issues with the unit, so they can catch them before they become big ones. If you want the most out of your AC unit, then schedule a tune-up at the beginning of fall and spring every year.

You don’t want to schedule just any HVAC technician to tune-up your AC unit, you want the pros. So, contact Efficient Systems today. We can tune up your AC unit, help you increase your indoor air quality, or help you install a new HVAC unit
