When the temperatures start to lower in Southeast Texas, it’s a great time to think about your home’s energy efficiency. At Efficient Systems, we know you don’t want to have to worry about a high energy bill or heating system malfunction on top of the chilly weather, so we’ve compiled a list of five tips to help conserve your energy this winter. Check out the list below to learn more!
1. Get a Heater Tune-Up
One of the best ways to ensure that you and your family stay warm this winter is to get routine heater maintenance. The last thing you want when those temperatures drop is to discover an issue with your heating system. Getting a tune-up or scheduling a routine maintenance visit will guarantee safe operation and keep your heating system running efficiently all winter long.
Luckily, at Efficient Systems, our technicians are familiar with all types of heating systems including:
- Furnaces
- Heat Pumps
- Ductless Heating
2. Let The Sun Shine In
Keep your curtains and blinds open on sunny days to let the sun naturally heat up the interior of your house. At night when the temperatures drop, make sure your blinds and curtains are closed to keep the warmer air inside your home from escaping through the less insulated windows.
3. Adjust Your Thermostat for Energy Efficiency
Lowering your thermostat by 10 to 12 degrees while you’re sleeping and when you’re away from your home can save you up to 10 percent on your energy bill. The ideal temperature to set your thermostat at during the day is about 68 degrees and around 58 degrees at night. Make sure you bundle up with clothes and blankets!
4. Keep Your Air Circulating
Ceiling fans are useful for keeping you cool during the summer months, but they can also be effective for circulating your heat! Most ceiling fans have a function that allows them to rotate clockwise which when used, can help pull the warm air down from the ceiling and help warm your home.
5. Keep Your Vents Clean
Keeping your internal vents clean is very important to ensure that your heating system is working correctly. If your vents are blocked, your heater won’t circulate your air properly and could cause issues for your furnace’s lifespan. Inside your house or apartment, check each vent to see if it has dirt, pet hair or dust buildup. If you notice that your vents are obstructed, you can remove the covers with a screwdriver and use a duster to lightly dust them off. You might want to put your vent covers inside a trash bag first to make sure the dust doesn’t fly around the room. If you notice that your ducts are filled with dust, you may require a full air duct cleaning. At Efficient Systems, we’ve got you covered on this!
